So the Hugo's happened down in ol' San Antonio, Gentle Reader, and lots of fabulous writers won fabulous large rocket ship (read: dildo) statues. (I'm sorry but... really.) But we, the us in the bar, holding down the table, waiting with the champagne, we cheered for the Campbell. The winner was announced and the bar went a little bonkers.

Not a Hugo, the Campbell is the Best New Writer Award and it went to Mur Lafferty.
Not only is Mur a talented writer she's a lovely person, a marvelous human being, and I'm lucky enough to call her a friend. For years she's been running the I Should Be Writing podcast one of the best resources for prospective authors out there. Mur was giving back to our community before she was even on that community's radar. If you aren't listening to her podcast, and you want to be a writer, you're hopeless.
I listened to I Should Be Writing before I sold Soulless. I listened to it after. I listened to it when I hit the Bestseller List and I'm still listening, nine novels later. I squealed with delight when Mur asked me for an interview shortly after Soulless released, and then I was terrified she wouldn't like me. (We ended up gossiping for hours after the interview.) There are other podcasts on the craft of writing out there, but it's Mur who discusses the emotional consequences and doles out the counseling we all need to survive. Her's has heart.
I went to Balticon several years ago in order to see all my podcasting heroes, particularly Mur. I was terribly nervous to meet her in person. (I learned later she was nervous to meet me, too.) We ended up closing down the bar with Paolo Bacigalupi and chocolate martinis. (Not a hangover I would wish on anyone.) I don't think the Campbell award could have gone to a better author-beast, but I suspect I am most awfully biased on the subject.
And it certainly went to the best dressed! For which you all know, I am particularly pleased. Also, her dress went perfectly with the Campbell Diadem. Coincidence? I think not.
