E&E ARC Contest the Second!

So this is both a contest and a peek into Etiquette & Espionage. Immediately upon arriving at school Sophronia gets embroiled in a stand off battle and meets her first mechanimal.

It had four legs—four very short legs—and a small, spiky tail. Steam emanated slightly from its underbelly, and smoke came out from under its leather earflaps. It looked a little like one of those sausage dogs the Germans were so fond of.

Sometime later . . .

Sophronia hesitated, and then—because everyone seemed to have forgotten him and he looked so forlorn—she scooped up the sausage dog mechanimal and hid him in her large pinafore pocket.

Sophronia names her new pet Bumbersnoot. And later introduces him to another new friend who has the following opinion . . .

“He’s quite the little beauty, isn’t he?”

Bumbersnoot had a long, sausage-like body, and while he was mostly bronze, it was clear he had some brass and iron parts, so that he was rather a patchwork. Fond of him though she was, “little beauty” was not a phrase Sophronia would have used to describe him.

“If you say so.”

Once again Little Brown has recklessly offered up 20 ARCs of Etiquette & Espionage and given the above description, here's the contest . . .

*E&EFinal

Art for ARCs!

The Rules
  • 1 entry per person
  • Open to those in the continental US, no PO Boxes
  • 20 winners chosen by random number
  • You must leave a email address with your entry
  • I will pass along your email to Little Brown, they will contact you for your mail address

Here's what to do to win . . .
  1. Given the information above, please create a piece of art based on Bumbersnoot. It can be anything from a polyvore collage to an outfit to a sketch to a photo of your own dog (or a friend's) dressed as Bumbersnoot. But it does have to be original.
  2. Post your art, or a photo of it, in an easily assessable online venue (blog, tumbler, FB, whatever). If on Facebook, I'd love it if you tagged me.
  3. Put a link to the image in the comments section bellow (either my Live Journal or Blogspot blog only). I am sorry, I can't enable anonymous posting, I get over 20 spams a day. Goodreads, Amazon, Facebook and other comment-challenging arenas are not allowed. <--------- li="li" part="part" read="read" this="this">
  4. You MUST include an email. If you forget and have to re-comment, then please delete your first comment and include both entry and email in a new one.
  5. One entry per person, please.
  6. You have until Sunday Dec. 16th. Winners will be chosen Monday Dec. 17 in the AM, and notified by Little Brown. Please check your Spam filters.
  7. Have fun!

I can't wait to see what you come up with. I know it's a limited time frame but remember this one is a challenge and with fewer entries you'll have a better chance at winning.

This will be my last Etiquette & Espionage ARC give away.

Book News:
My upcoming events and sightings for 2013 have been updated.

Quote of the Day:

Parasol Protectorate Dickens Invasion!

EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Dickens Faire costs $25 to attend but it is well worth the money as it starts at 10, doesn't end until 7, and there is something to do for every second of those 8 hours. (Including a delectable High Tea.)

Dickens Tardis

5 PM at the Green Man Parlour I will be signing and possibly reading a bit. There maybe even be a small Q&A if our gracious hostess allows, and there are enough interested parties present. Green Man Parlour is on the map near Pickwick Place.

Please do come, I would love love to see some of you there! In victorian, steampunk, or everyday garb, just come.

Also please bring your own books. There will not be any for sale (that'd not be proper in this particular environment.)

Yes, I'll be milling about enjoying the fair beforehand. I should be easy to spot, I'll have my vintage black parasol and be dressed as the cover of Changeless. Happy to have a chat, some tea, or a dance, but please come to the event at 5 if you want anything signed and don't ask in the street? Thank you.

Changeless

I will be trying to do this under the radar. I'd rather not make a fuss, it's intended to be a bit of fun because I love Dickens Fair. And I think you would too. It's like experiencing Alexia's world inside our world, and it certainly influenced my books.

Aside from a few select friends (and now you, Gentle Reader) no one Important will know I am there. It'd be great, therefore, if you didn't go asking at the front gate "Where's Gail Carriger?" Or inquiring of the Powers That Be, "Hay when's that Gail Carriger signing?" Because they won't have any clue what you are talking about. And I'd really love it to, ah-hem, stay that way.

Bride

Surprise bonus photo op! If you stay to the end of the Fair I'll be (most likely) trotting down to do a window at Dark Garden at 6:30pm. No, it won't be risque, but I will be doing the five Alexia poses from the covers of the five Parasol Protectorate books, with my parasol, in order, in a corset, for your delectation.

Did I mention they have the most wonderful Hot Buttered Rum at Dickens? Oh yes they do. And the Rum Cake at the Tea Room is to die for!

Book News:
Etiquette & Espionage will be released in audiobook format, but I understand it will take longer to organize the recording process than the printing. I don't have the release date yet, rest assured the release date will appear on my website and my blog as soon as I know anything. The narrator will not be Emily Gray, we wanted a younger voice for Sophronia. But I have been in on the process and I can tell you she will be wonderful.

Las Vegas Report!

I do apologize, Gentle Reader, but copy edits on Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School Book the Second) have eaten my noggin. I have the brain worms! By they are very stylish brain worms. And I've handed her in. Book #10, in the bag.

You'll never guess what I did over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend? Well, yes I ate too much, drank too much, talked too much, visited Dickens Fair, thanked a great many people, and generally yucked it up but I also spent three days on copy edits. Because, frankly, they had to be done. Glamorous life of a NYT author: others are frolicking in four days of freedom, covering themselves in the cha-ching of consumerism, and I never got out of yoga pants. Yes, the AB mocked me openly.

Shenanigins

I'm only telling you this as a kind of explanation for why I'm a week behind on my Las Vegas convention report. I was in Vegas for NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English) Friday before last.

Friday Saturday

I wore black and leopard, ate some seriously amazing food, winced a lot at the general attire and attitude of those who frequent the MGM, and skittered back home to California with unseemly haste.

Desert

I had a panel with Libba Bray on Fantastical Histories: Shedding Light on Literary Tropes Through Fantasy and Alternative History first thing in the morning. I believe I managed to speak, which in an of itself is a bit of a fantastical history. The audience, being all teachers, asked some truly amazing questions (which I adroitly avoided by dint of being half asleep) and Libba is a hoot and a half. Afterwords, I signed at the booth for a solid 45 minutes, which is all I have learned to ask for at an event. ARCs of Etiquette & Espionage were distributed as well as copies of Soulless Vol. 1 the manga.

Saturday Fan

I had a deliciously fun interview with Vocab Gal where I talked all about some of my favorite words and why I love them. She shot video, so hopefully it will turn up on YouTube eventually. I promise to post as soon as I know more.

In other news I've been contacted by all those who won the Manga contest ~ your prizes are on the way. For those who were chosen from the E&E ARC contest, Little Brown is mailing your books out soon.

Next up:

I've added a surprise Last Gasp 2012 event for Saturday December 15 in San Francisco for all you locals. More details soon! Just getting all my ducks in a row. You know how much I love my ducks tidy.

Quack!

After that, one last contest for galley's of E&E. Get your creative (Ivy-like, perhaps?) hats on, this one's ART for ARCs! Watch this space.

Book News:
The Parasol Protectorate boxed set would make a great gifty . . . just saying. Also, if you want signed books get your request in to Borderlands before Dec 15th, that's the last time I'll be able to get in to sign stock for them before the holidays. Frankly, the sooner the better, so they can order stuff if they don't already have it.
