  • I'm participating in Lit Quake's Lit Crawl on the evening of Saturday, October 9, in San Francisco.
  • I'm slated to teach a writing class for Wordplay at Books, Inc. Opera Plaza in San Francisco Sunday, October 24 from 10:30 AM ~ 1:30 PM. The tentative title is: Material Characterization: Peopling Fiction with Objects, Culture and Comedy.
  • At OryCon November 12 ~ 14, 2010
  • Signing at Powell's in Beaverton Sci-Fi Authorfest on Sunday, November 14, 4 ~ 5 PM.
  • At the Seattle Steampunk Convention November 19 ~ 21, 2010.
I'm hoping that will round out the year.

I've nothing more for today because I'm pushing hard to get this draft done so that it can go to my first reader so that she has time to get it back to me before I leave for Down Under. I'm certain you all understand. I promise that for the next 2 weeks all blogs will be charming, and witty, and delightful, and . . . well, at least something more than just ketchup.

Emily says, "I got a huge kick out of the lead character, too. It’s hard not to like a woman who, in the first chapter, retreats to the library to escape a boring ball, where she scolds a rude vampire for his lack of manners, whacks him with her parasol, and then is more upset that said vampire knocked over the treacle tart than by the fact that he tried to bite her. And that's just the beginning. Wait until you read the exchanges between her and her friend Ivy – hilarious!"
SPOILER ALERT! Changeless blurb gives away ending of Soulless. Tansy says, "I particularly liked the dirigible ride, which gave a real sense of how awesome and strange the whole zeppelin travel thing would be, and the awesome lady scientist Madame Lefoux. I rather liked the extra emphasis on mad science in this volume, especially as regards Alexia’s splendid new steampunk parasol. Really, this is the best parasol in the history of the universe. We all need one."
Out September 1, 2010! Even bigger SPOILER ALERT! Really, DON'T READ THE BLURB ON AMAZON if you haven't read the other books first.

Character Study: Lord Conall Maccon

Character Study: Lord Conall Maccon, Earl of Woolsey, Head of HRM Bureau of Unnatural Registry (BUR)

"Mark my words, I will use something much, much stronger than smelling salts," came a growl in Miss Tarabotti's left ear. The voice was low, and tinged with a hint of Scotland. It would have caused Alexia to shiver and think primal monkey-thoughts about moons and running far and fast, if she'd had a soul. Instead it caused her to sigh in exasperation and sit up. ~ Soulless

Lord Conall Maccon, Earl of Woolsey, was yelling. Loudly. This was to be expected from Lord Maccon, who was generally a loud sort of gentleman – the ear-bleeding combination of lung capacity and a large barrel chest. ~ Changeless

He was not drunk in the halfhearted manner of most supernatural creatures, wherein twelve pints of bitter had finally turned the world slightly fuzzy. No, Lord Maccon was rip-roaring, tumble down, without a doubt, pickled beyond the gherkin. ~ Blameless

The Minutia that Makes Life Worth Living

So, Gentle Reader, I've been a little under the weather recently and it's made me think (not a lot else I can do) of all the little frivolities and minutia of life that make it worth living. I decided to concoct a list:
So any thoughts? What's your silly little thing that makes you happy each day?
Australian speculative fiction review, "Also, I have to add that I am one of those people who never finds werewolves remotely sexy (ugh, dog) – but Lord Maccon is one of the most endearingly cranky and seductive urban fantasy heroes I have come across in great time." SPOILER ALERT! Changeless blurb gives away ending of Soulless.

Interview

A new/old interview I did back in January, posted in English. Here's a sample:

What else inspired you when you came up with the characters?
I love the ridiculous, in life, in literature, in television. Like most authors, I find myself borrowing from any or all of these places when Print building characters. I don't like to be too stereotypical, if you continue to read the Parasol Protectorate series you will find I have built up some archetypes in Soulless that I will take great glee in tearing apart.

I am sorry my dears, nothing more for today. I'm afraid I am rather unwell. It's taking me out for the count for the rest of the week. I hope to be back and in top form soon.

A short list of query don'ts.

Stella says, "Ms. Carriger's work is, in a word, delightful. Her books are witty, urbane, elegant, crafty, well-mannered, steamy, smooth, punchy, hilarious, heartwarming and heartbreaking. I think of them as kitchen sink stories, because you've got a little bit of everything in there. Her prose is gorgeous, her characters are interesting and her plots are inventive. You want to make her acquaintance. You really, really do." Very kind!
SPOILER ALERT! Changeless blurb gives away ending of Soulless.
Tansy spots one of my underhanded plots, "Another plus of this series is that Alexia is surrounded by women, so many different female characters!"
Out September 1, 2010! Even bigger SPOILER ALERT! Really, DON'T READ THE BLURB ON AMAZON if you haven't read the other books first.

It's Story Time! Gail's First Fast Food Expereince

Alexia in ShockBut first, I've an interview over at Murder by the Book. Here's a sample,
John: Madame Lefoux was a great addition to your world, will we see her in any future books?
Gail: 'Ze lovely French inventor has a very large part to play in Blameless, Book the Third, and a pivotal role in Heartless, Book the Fourth. I don't know yet about the last book, some characters don't weasel their way in until I'm actually writing the story.

The Story of Gail's First In-N-Out

So I was raised without fast food, Gentle Reader, and it wasn't until I was about 20 that I had my first Drive Through Experience, and it was at In-N-Out a popular indy burger joint here on the West Coast. I was driving, which meant I had to do the ordering. It all began with my utter confusion over the menu.

Gail: Why are there so few choices?
Friends: Because there's a whole secret code to ordering.
Gail: There is?
Friends: Yes, you want the Double Double Animal Style.
Gail: I do? That sounds rather naughty. But, OK.

Next up the completely incomprehensible speaker box (which turns out to be fast food standard issue).

Speaker: MMMMasdmsadm
Gail: What?
Speaker: ASdaslkdjdasdkajdasl
Gail: Um. Hi Charlie?
Speaker: ASdkalsdjaldj
Gail: Help me.
Friends: Just give it your order.
Gail: OK.

Finally, we made our way to a window, where instead of giving us food, they took money (food apparently came out the next window). The cashier being an adorable Asian boy I was slightly flustered. Particularly when he said:

AAB: Here's your change. Would you like a lap dance with that?
Gail: Would I like a lap dance!?!
AAB (without missing a beat): Sure
Friends (in hysterics): Lap mat. He wants to know if you want a lap mat.
Gail: Lap mat? What the hell is a lap mat? I'd rather have the lap dance.

Which is why, Gentle Reader, whenever a visit to In-N-Out is suggested, someone in my group of friends will pipe up with, "Would you like a lap dance with that?"

Sigh.

SPOILER ALERT! Changeless blurb gives away ending of Soulless. Aria says, "Such a nice change of pace from most the books and authors I enjoy."
