What Got You Into Reading Fantasy?

Research - Tea and BooksSlice of Sci Fi has been having a long-running and rather interesting conversation on their voicemail show about what got them into sci-fi television or movies. This got me curious about you, Gentle Reader (many things do).

I'd love to know, what got you into reading fantasy? Did you start out reading fantasy at a young age? Did you get into reading via a cartoon or movie or video game? Or did you come at it via steampunk or some aesthetic movement? Were you born into fandom, did you find fandom, or did you have fandom thrust upon you? Or do you not consider yourself part of the SF/F culture at all?

I read Tolkein way back when, but I consider my gateway drug to sci-fi and fantasy actually to be Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness series. I didn't find fandom until relatively late in life, I believe I was about 18.

So, what about you? Tell Miss Carriger all about it. . .

Lauren's tongue-in-cheek review. "Or with it, rather, because although it’s a book about people who take themselves Victorian levels of seriously (i.e., Seriously with a capital “S” and, probably, multiple layers of undergarments), Soulless is in it for the romp."
SPOILER ALERT! Changeless blurb gives away ending of Soulless. Minding Spot says, "Set in the Victorian age, CHANGELESS is witty, suspenseful, and phenomenal. Alexia is a superb character who is charming, yet firm in her beliefs and her parasol will knock anyone out of her way. Clearly, a new genre has been born; part steampunk, romance, mystery, fantasy, and paranormal - CHANGELESS is sure to please many."
Out September 1, 2010! Even bigger SPOILER ALERT! Really, DON'T READ THE BLURB ON AMAZON if you haven't read the other books first.
Heartless: Plugging away. Due Nov 1. (Upped the word count target because this draft looks to be going over.)
